Lee Davis Wins Opening Pirelli Cayman Interseries Endurance Cup Championship Sprint Race of The Mitty at Road Atlanta
Two-Time Reigning Series Champion Davis runs fastest Cayman Interseries lap ever at Road Atlanta for Luna-C Clothing
ATLANTA
(April 28, 2012) Two-time series champion Lee
Davis won his third straight Pirelli Cayman Interseries
Endurance Cup Championship race in record fashion Saturday at Road Atlanta in
the 36th Annual Classic Motorsports Mitty.
After qualifying on the pole earlier on
Saturday morning with a time of 1:33.939 in his No. 33 Cayman S that carries
the colors of a Brun Motorsport Porsche 956 and Luna-C Clothing, Davis held off
runner-up Mark Sandridge
who had another strong run in his white and red-and-yellow striped No. 49
Cayman S themed after his 1994 IMSA Champion Team Salad Porsche 911 RSR.
Finishing third was Bob
Schneider, driving his white Martini & Rossi Cayman S
modeled after the famous "Baby" Porsche 935, who moved up from fourth on the
grid.
During the seven-lap event, Davis clocked in with a blistering lap time of
1:33.521 (97.775 mph), the fastest lap ever in a Cayman Interseries Porsche.
Davis averaged 90.369 mph in the victory and held a 1.905 second margin over
Sandridge at the finish line.
Davis was passed by Sandridge on the second lap of the sprint race but returned
the favor on the next circuit, making a pass heading down the final stretch of
the hilly 2.64-mile Road Atlanta course.
"Mark made a great move in Turn 1 when we came up on a slower car," Davis said.
"You just had to work your way through the traffic, but it was a fun race."
"That was a great pass," Sandridge said in victory circle.
Schneider was slowed by traffic much of the race and admitted it was tough to
stay in touch with Davis and Sandridge.
"They were way ahead of me," Schneider said. "I lost sight of them a time
or too."
Rookie driver Rafael Navarro
IV was fourth in his first Cayman Interseries race, his first
at Road Atlanta and first ever in a mid-engine car. The 18-year-old 'Cuatro'
qualified third earlier in the day at the wheel of the yellow No. 55 Cayman S
that pays tribute to a Sandeman/David Piper Racing Porsche 917K.
"I made a few mistakes, but it wasn't bad for my first race," Navarro said.
Charles Smithee
completed the top five in his white No. 25 Cayman S that carries the theme of
the Le Mans-winning Mobil 1 Porsche GT-1.
Pirelli
Cayman Interseries action at The Mitty continues tomorrow with the second and
final sprint of the weekend and the featured one-hour enduro.
